How Often Should You Trim Your Beard?

Got whiskers? Considering letting those bad boys get some airtime? Whether you’re a committed facial hair aficionado or just toying with the idea, knowing how often you should trim your beard is essential to get that perfect vibe.

From goatees to bushy works of art, every guy needs to keep his looking sharp and well cared for. Here’s how to do it…

How Often Should You Trim Your Beard: Essential FAQs

  •     Trimming, shaping, and washing
  •     Beating beard itch

Trimming, shaping, and washing

While there’s no hard and fast rule as to how often you should trim your beard, you’ll probably need to do this at least once a week. If your beard’s really detailed, then it’s likely to be more like every other day.

When it comes to shaping, try do define the natural line of your beard. Don’t do it when you’re in a rush, take your time and do it at a time of day when you’re able to dedicate the amount of time necessary to do an effective job.

Wash your beard whenever you wash your hair. Scrubs are recommended to remove the oil that builds up on the skin below it. Post-washing, add beard oil to help hydrate the skin and hair.

Beating beard itch

OK, so there’s no getting away from the fact that growing a beard can itch like hell…! It’s caused by the hairs growing at different angles as they push through the skin. You can reduce the intensity with regular combing.

Beard Trimming 101

  •     Use the right tools
  •     Get trimming

Use the right tools

Using the right tools is vital for good beard maintenance. This should include:

A beard brush (boar-bristle is a great choice)

      A beard comb

      Facial hair scissors

      Clippers

      Razor

      Styling agent/beard balm/oil/conditioner

Get trimming

Now you’re all set up, it’s time to get trimming.

  1.     Wash and dry: You can use regular shampoo or a specialist beard product if you prefer
  2.     Brush your bead: Brush the hairs upwards so they stand against the grain of natural growth
  3.     Snip, snip, clip: You can either snip away at stray hairs with the scissors or use the clippers to trim all the hairs to an even length. Don’t go too mad at first—you can always go shorter, but you can’t reverse a harsh cut if you go a bit OTT. If using clippers, go with a higher grade to begin with, reducing down if you decide it’s not short enough
  4.     Trim your mustache: Comb the hairs downwards and trim any hairs that extend over the upper lip
  5.     Comb into place and check for stray hairs: Use the comb to return all hairs to where you’d usually style them. Use the scissors to trim any stray hairs that become noticeable
  6.     Rinse thoroughly: To remove any hairs that’ve got caught
  7.     Style: Style as usual. Carry out a last check for hairs you might’ve missed and trim with the scissors.
