Kim Kardashian. Ariana Grande. Jennifer Lopez.
What do these three celebrities have in common other than being A-listers with a huge following?
They’ve all used hair extensions at some point. There’s a reason why hair extensions are so popular—not just with celebrities but with women all over the world. A survey found that 93% of respondents would consider wearing hair extensions. Furthermore, the global hair extension market is projected to grow into a $3.43-billion industry in 2028.
Hair extensions are incredibly versatile. They can be styled in any way and empower the wearer to experiment with different looks.
These come in an array of lengths and styles that can dramatically enhance the wearer’s look. They come in handy when you’re trying to hide split ends or if you want to add more length or volume to your locks. Hair extensions can also hide issues with hair loss, which can help enhance the wearer’s self-esteem.
Hair extensions have come a long way since they first emerged in the Victorian era. Modern hair extensions have evolved in terms of quality and how they’re attached or bonded to the wearer’s hair.
Hair extensions can be classified into two main categories: human hair and synthetic hair.
Human hair extensions are made from real human hair, which comes from donors. They feel smooth and silky and offer a more natural look. They also offer more flexibility when it comes to styling options.
Synthetic hair extensions are made to look like they’re mimicking human hair. They’re made from a variety of synthetic materials and blended fibers. Compared to human hair extensions, they’re more affordable but not ideal for styling (heat or chemicals), as they can be easily damaged.
Once you’ve decided on the type of material you want, let’s dive into the different types of hair extensions:
Clip-in hair extensions are easy to use and are ideal for DIY styling at home. They’re wefts that you clip onto your hair using the clips attached to the wefts’ base. If you’re looking for a quick fix that does little to no damage to your hair, then clip-ins are an excellent option. Plus, they’re incredibly low maintenance—you only need to wash them after around 15 to 20 wears or if you start to see any product buildup.
Tape-in hair extensions are pre-taped, and you only need to tape or glue them to your hair. You might need some help attaching these, as they should be aligned with your roots and you need to use a heated tool to melt the glue. One of the most common issues with tape-in hair extensions is that the tape can loosen or slip off if you’re applying styling products.
Keratin hair extensions or fusion bonds are ideal for any hair type, especially for those who have fine hair. They’re also low maintenance. They’re attached to the hair using a pre-adhesive extension tip and a heat clamp, which melts the glue on the pre-bonded extension. They take longer to apply, but they’re longer lasting.
Micro-links, also known as I-tips or micro bead hair extensions, are attached to the hair using a silicone-lined bead and a tool that secures the bead. With micro-link hair extensions, there’s no need to use a heated tool or glue. However, when not done correctly, they can damage the hair, as the bead may pull at the roots. Consequently, this can cause hair to be pulled out when removed.
Sew-ins or weaves are ideal for thicker hair. They’re applied to the hair by “sewing” the extensions into your natural hair. They take longer to apply, but you can wear them anywhere between 8 and 10 weeks before you need to remove or reposition them.
Hairpieces like wigs and toupees can also be considered hair extensions. They can be easily secured and can add instant volume and length. They can also be styled in different ways and allow you to temporarily experiment with different hairstyles.
